Visually–impaired Italian athlete Annalisa Minetti posts world 1500 metres record.
Beauty contest entrant, singer and star athlete: the triple life of Annalisa Minetti. The 35 year-old, who recently broke the paralympic world record for the 1500 metres, has an amazing story to tell.
Annalisa, who was born partially-sighted, was a participant in the 1997 edition of annual beauty pageant Miss Italy, but deep-down had always dreamt of becoming a singer. To fulfil her ambition, the following year she entered and won the Sanremo Festival, Italy’s most important singing competition.
ON THE WAY TO LONDON. But her career as a singer failed to take off following her San Remo success and Annalisa decided to try her hand at athletics, in spite of the difficulties posed by her disability. She originally set herself the goal of qualifying for the 800 metres at the London 2012 Paralympics, but upon learning that this race would not be included in the programme for the games, switched to the 1500 metres, posting a new world record at the longer distance that beat the previous record of 4’53’’78 set by Czech athlete Miroslava Sedlackova at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics.
Annalisa’s next target is gold in London. And who would bet against her adding a third success to her list of achievements?
